For centuries, the River Mur formed a strict boundary in Graz, separating the wealthy, aristocratic Altstadt on the Left Bank from the working-class and industrial Murvorstadt on the Right Bank. Rather than protecting its UNESCO-listed red-tiled roofscape behind historicist glass cases, Graz chose deliberate urban collisions. Starting with the expressive structural experiments of the Grazer Schule and accelerating through its 2003 tenure as European Capital of Culture, the city inserted avant-garde interventions directly into its historic core and across its river. On this walk, you will trace how biomorphic acrylic, cantilevered steel, subterranean voids, and raw structural replicas spark energetic conversations with 19th-century masonry and medieval rock faces.
