Metallic Cantilevers at Nikolaiplatz

On arrival

Locate the small green square at Nikolaiplatz 5 along the riverbank, framed by 19th-century residential blocks, where a golden-silver cubic structure hovers over the pavement.

Look closer

Notice how the building envelope extends to the exact millimeter of its plot boundary while appearing to hover. Observe the flush glass curtain walls interlaid with metallic panels finished in a shimmering silver-gold, which form deep window recesses or flush archive zones depending on internal room use.

Demonstrates how contemporary engineering maximizes density on constrained historic sites without crushing underlying 20th-century infrastructure.

At Nikolaiplatz 5 along the Right Bank riverbank, the NIK Office Building presents a masterclass in extreme urban density and structural lightness. Designed by Atelier Thomas Pucher and Bramberger Architects following a 2007 competition and built between 2009 and 2010, the structure sits on a tight plot that previously held a 17th-century boathouse, a two-story shed, and later an underground parking garage built in the 1980s. To increase site density 2.5 times without overloading the weak garage columns below, the engineers inserted a hidden steel grid (Rostverteiler) beneath the ground floor to distribute load, supporting an ultra-lightweight steel frame above.
