The Floating Shell on the Mur

On arrival

Look into the River Mur between the two riverbanks to spot the silver tubular steel shell platform connected to both shores by footbridge ramps.

Look closer

Examine the twisted lattice frame of silver steel tubes creating a dual topology: a concave open-air amphitheatre bowl that seats roughly 350 people, morphing smoothly into a convex, glass-roofed dome housing a café. Inspect the articulated rotational joints where the bridge ramps land on each bank, designed alongside vertical pylons to let the island rise and fall dynamically during extreme high-water floods, and spot the upstream steel deflection piles built to ward off floating debris.

Illustrates how temporary avant-garde culture transformed the natural barrier of the River Mur into an active public gathering space.

Moored directly in the riverbed between Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai and Lendkai, the Murinsel is an amphibious architectural bridge designed by Vito Acconci and Acconci Studio, based on a master concept by Robert Punkenhofer for Graz's 2003 European Capital of Culture year. Measuring 47 metres in length, this floating steel and glass platform was commissioned strictly as a temporary installation intended for dismantling or sale after 2003. However, overwhelming public demand and technical studies prompted city authorities to grant it permanent structural and water-rights status, turning temporary art into permanent civic infrastructure.

Accessibility at this stop

Footbridge ramps connect the island to both riverbanks, and seating is noted in the open-air amphitheatre bowl. Gradient, ramp surface, clear path width, and accessible restroom facilities are unrecorded.

These notes describe known conditions at this stop. Urban conditions can change, so assess the situation on site.
