The Friendly Alien and Cast Iron

On arrival

Look for the Südtiroler Platz intersection on the Right Bank where a vast, glowing blue acrylic 'blob' physically connects to the historic cast-iron facade of the Eisernes Haus.

Look closer

Observe the transparent glass travelator bridge known as 'The Needle' physically connecting the upper floor of the cast-iron Eisernes Haus directly into the blue acrylic body. Look up at the skin formed of 1,066 double-curved blue acrylic panels and 15 roof nozzles; 14 point north for daylight while 1 points precisely east toward the Schlossberg Clock Tower. On the river-facing facade, notice the BIX grid of 930 circular fluorescent lights embedded beneath the acrylic skin.

Establishes the core narrative: Graz uses radical architectural interventions on the Right Bank to disrupt historic conservatism and bridge social divides.

Stand before one of Central Europe's most striking urban juxtapositions. On one side sits the Eisernes Haus, constructed between 1847 and 1848 by Josef Benedict Withalm as one of Continental Europe's earliest surviving cast-iron framework structures. Directly grafted onto its upper level is the Kunsthaus Graz, a biomorphic, blue acrylic-skinned structure designed by Spacelab (Peter Cook and Colin Fournier) and opened in September 2003. Fournier explicitly coined the moniker 'Friendly Alien' during design work to describe this organic visitor deliberately interrupting the 19th-century streetscape. Placed on the Right Bank in the Lend district, the museum was a political choice aimed at jumpstarting urban renewal in a historically neglected, working-class suburb.
