An Architecture of Absence

On arrival

Walk into the public courtyard enclosed by the historic museum blocks, where a stone-paved plaza is punctured by large conical glass craters flush with the ground.

Look closer

Walk across the continuous stone-carpeted courtyard to inspect the five large conical glass openings ('Lichtkegel' or glass halos). Look down into the largest conical crater to see an open escalator funneling daylight directly into the subterranean foyer, shop, and reception area below.

Highlights subterranean spatial synthesis as an alternative to iconic above-ground building additions.

Tucked into the internal courtyard between Kalchberggasse 2, Neutorgasse 45, and Raubergasse, the Joanneumsviertel represents spatial synthesis without above-ground volume. Designed by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos in collaboration with eep architekten following a 2006 competition and built from 2008 to 2011, this subterranean visitor centre unifies three distinct historical institutions: the 18th-century Lesliehof (Natural History Museum), the late 19th-century Neo-Baroque Neue Galerie, and the Styrian Provincial Library. The architects consciously rejected an iconic above-ground building, choosing an 'architecture of absence' that protects surrounding historic facades while modernizing spatial logistics underground.

Accessibility at this stop

The courtyard features a stone-paved surface ('stone-carpeted courtyard') and an open escalator leading to the underground foyer. Step-free elevator alternatives to the underground levels are not specified in the text.

These notes describe known conditions at this stop. Urban conditions can change, so assess the situation on site.
