WHEN A FLOWER FAIR BECAME COURTSHIP

On arrival

Use Plaça de Sant Jaume in front of the Palau de la Generalitat as the public-space anchor. The story works without entering either government building.

Look closer

Imagine the civic square functioning as a flower market rather than today's political plaza; the surviving institutional facade fixes the historical fair to a visible place.

Love acquires a ritual, then a legend arrives later and gives the ritual better special effects.

Sant Jordi is now almost impossible to separate from roses, books and romantic gestures, but the historical layers are not the same as the legend. Catalonia's cultural-heritage authority traces Barcelona's rose custom to a fifteenth-century flower fair held in front of the Palau de la Generalitat. The fair later acquired a courtship function, with roses given to loved women, and the day came to be treated as a celebration for lovers. The famous rose growing from the dragon's blood belongs to a later popular addition to the legend. That distinction improves the story rather than spoiling it: ritual, commerce, affection and myth accumulated here over time instead of appearing fully formed in one medieval moment.

Accessibility at this stop

Large civic square with generally level public space, but security layouts, demonstrations, events and temporary barriers can alter circulation and require current verification.
