KISSES STREET — the city refuses to explain the punchline

On arrival

Stand at the entrance to Carrer dels Petons from the public street and look for the street-name plaque; there is no need to enter private thresholds or block the narrow lane.

Look closer

The strongest observable detail is simply the official street name on a very small, ordinary lane — a grand romantic promise attached to a place whose etymology remains unresolved.

Every romantic comedy wants a neat ending. Barcelona gives us three competing explanations and walks away before the credits.

Finish at Carrer dels Petons, where Barcelona seems to hand us the perfect romantic street name and then refuses to provide a reliable origin story. Several versions circulate. One hypothesis connects the name to a seventeenth-century resident, Joan Pontons, and is reported as the version supported by the city's nomenclator. Another story says condemned prisoners exchanged final kisses here before execution. The problem is chronology: historians note that the name predates the post-1714 execution setting used to explain that tale. There are other romantic explanations too, but none closes the case. The correct Streetours ending is therefore transparent: we do not know for certain why Kisses Street is called Kisses Street.

Accessibility at this stop

Very narrow historic lane. Surface width, turning space and obstructions require in-person verification; use the entrance as the default viewing point if the lane is crowded.
