ONE COUPLE, TWO MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES

On arrival

Stand in Plaça de Sant Just facing the basilica. The route does not require entering the church or accessing archival material on site.

Look closer

Look at the church as the surviving institutional anchor for one of the two documents; the second institution in the story is present only through the archive record.

The couple says yes. Bureaucracy replies: excellent, we are going to need that in more than one format.

The archive turns romance into paperwork. Barcelona's Historical Archive preserves records for Emili Matheu and Rosa de Palma: a religious marriage certificate dated 18 November 1872 and signed by the vicar of Sant Just i Pastor, plus a civil marriage certificate referring to the same couple and same marriage date, issued in Barcelona in 1874 by the municipal judge of the Sant Pere district. The distinction matters. We can anchor the religious record to this church, but we should not pretend the civil procedure happened here. The documents are useful because they show a relationship becoming legible to different institutions — church and municipality — each producing its own official paper trail.

Accessibility at this stop

Exterior square stop. The basilica is not required for the route; current paving, gradients and entrance accessibility require separate human verification.
