The panel estate was told not to crush the village

On arrival

Finish around Olbrachtovo náměstí, where several scales of the housing estate can be compared from public space.

Look closer

Look for the change in building height as you read back toward the older streets: the transition in scale is the design move this stop is about.

The final layer is not survival despite modern planning, but survival partly because one modern plan made room for it.

Finish where the old Komín story could easily have ended: mass housing. A 1968 plan by František Kopřivík and Jiří Zapletal led to construction from 1969, eventually creating 2,032 flats for roughly 6,000 residents. But the municipal profile singles out an unusual urban decision. The architects graduated building heights so the blocks nearest the old houses were lower, with taller buildings stepping up farther away. It also notes that, unlike many other Brno housing estates, Komín's older fabric survived essentially intact. Stand around Olbrachtovo náměstí and then look back toward the village core. The paneláky did not make Komín unchanged. They made it much bigger while deliberately leaving the old settlement readable.

Accessibility at this stop

Public estate streets and paths provide multiple viewpoints, but exact kerbs, crossings and gradient continuity require human verification.
