Resistance, compressed into fractals

On arrival

At the Rooseveltova–Dvořákova corner, find the bronze three-sided memorial in the small space by the Palace of Justice.

Look closer

Walk around all three faces and compare how the repeating fractal relief changes the silhouette of the simple pyramid.

A memorial can encode chronology in geometry—and make its location part of the evidence.

This bronze memorial does not narrate the twentieth century with heroic figures. Michal Gabriel's work, unveiled in 2006, uses a three-sided pyramid to hold three historical periods: the First World War era, resistance to Nazism, and resistance to communist totalitarianism. Repeated fractal structures push the basic volume outward and, according to the municipal description, create tension and continuity between those periods. The location is part of the work's argument too: Brno's historical record says the site beside the Palace of Justice was selected after a study partly because the building is associated with trials of opponents of totalitarian regimes. Material, geometry and address all carry the memory together.
