Loos, remembered by an absence

On arrival

At Janáčkovo náměstí, locate the compact concrete-and-onyx monument dedicated to Adolf Loos.

Look closer

Look into the recessed volumes and compare the heavy concrete mass with the translucent onyx inserts; after dark, the onyx is designed to glow.

The final monument remembers by reproducing what is missing rather than what is present.

End with a monument built around a negative. Oldřich Morys and Jaroslav Sedlák's 2020 work for Adolf Loos uses concrete and onyx to reinterpret the architect's self-designed tomb in Vienna. Brno describes the object as an imprint or negative of that funerary form: the grave remains in Vienna while its inverse appears in the city where Loos was born and grew up. The municipal account also says the internal composition refers to Loos's Raumplan, while onyx elements illuminate after dark. It is an unusually architectural way to make a memorial: not a likeness, but a spatial relationship between presence and absence, Brno and Vienna, solid and void.
