On arrival
Step through the entrance into the main nave, looking toward the interior base of the bell tower.
Look closer
The encapsulated tower base inside the nave, high Mudéjar brick vaulting, and the Renaissance altarpiece by Damián Forment.
Demonstrates structural expansion around the tower and the artistic synthesis between Mudéjar vaulting and Renaissance sculpture.
San Pablo was constituted as a parish in 1259, and its later Mudéjar church replaced an earlier Romanesque church of San Blas as the population grew. Municipal documentation describes the tower as having begun independently beside the church and later being absorbed into the enlarged building. That documented construction sequence matters because it also sets a limit on what we can claim: theories proposing an older Islamic origin remain hypotheses rather than settled fact. You do not need access to the tower to follow the route. Opening conditions and guided access can change, so current arrangements should be checked with the parish or official tourism information before visiting. The architectural story here is therefore one of a church growing around a tower, with uncertainty kept visible where the evidence remains contested.
