Mendel, rendered as giant peas

On arrival

At Mendlovo náměstí, find the bronze cluster of oversized pea shoots and seed forms.

Look closer

Count and compare the differently shaped and coloured seed elements arranged around the bronze plant forms.

A monument to a scientist can represent a pattern of thought instead of a face.

Start with a monument that refuses the obvious portrait. Hrachovina, Jaromír Gargulák's 2023 bronze work, turns Gregor Mendel's scientific legacy into oversized pea shoots and seed forms. The city description says its central arrangement visualises a 9:3:3:1 ratio associated with Mendelian inheritance. Then the object gets stranger: Brno also states that the sculpture contains a symbolic message for future generations including DNA attributed to Mendel and selected contemporary figures. That makes the piece work on several scales at once—plant, diagram, monument and time capsule. Do not search for Mendel's face. Search for the moment when a scientific abstraction becomes something you can circle on foot.
