Viennese Secessionism and Unfinished Ambitions

On arrival

Stand across from Gran Via de Jaume I, 2 at the corner of Carrer de Ciutadans, looking up toward the roof crest.

Look closer

Undulating ceramic roof balustrade topped with sculpted glazed owl figures and abstract geometric balcony ornaments.

Masó's expanding urban ambitions meet client budget disputes, leaving a striking Secessionist roofline over simplified lower storeys.

Cross towards Gran Via de Jaume I, 2 to inspect a corner building that marks Masó's first apartment block beyond the old medieval ramparts. Built between 1908 and 1910, Casa Batlle shows strong Viennese Secessionist influences from Masó's early career. Look up at the roofline: an undulating ceramic balustrade features sculpted glazed owl figures, or mussols, perched along the crest, alongside geometric balcony details. Yet the building also tells a story of compromise. Disagreements with developer Lluís Batlle over spiraling construction costs led Masó to resign as site director in 1910. As a result, the lower facade finishes were executed in a simplified manner compared to Masó's original elaborate drawings.
