REPAIR TRAINS → REUSE SPACE — the workshop's second life is still contested

On arrival

Enter from Revaler Straße 99 only through publicly open access and use the historic gate/edge buildings as the anchor; the route does not depend on entering any individual club or business.

Look closer

Look for surviving brick industrial and administrative buildings beneath layers of signs, murals and later interventions; old railway fabric and current uses overlap rather than replacing one another cleanly.

The railway repair shop got a cultural second life. Now that second life is itself being redesigned.

RAW-Gelände began as railway infrastructure, not nightlife branding. The repair works developed from the late 1860s beside the Ostbahn, with surviving buildings along Revaler Straße still protected as evidence of that industrial system. After the works closed and the site became industrial wasteland, a second life began in 1999 as art, culture and sociocultural users reopened parts of the grounds and reused old buildings. But avoid the easy ending where 'abandoned factory becomes cool cultural quarter' and the story stops. The district is still planning substantial redevelopment. Cultural uses, heritage, private development and new construction are negotiating the site's next brief right now.

Accessibility at this stop

The grounds contain active venues, varied surfaces and changing construction/access conditions. Treat this as a public-edge/site stop and verify the current accessible path before publication.

These notes describe known conditions at this stop. Urban conditions can change, so assess the situation on site.
