On arrival
Stop outside the Stadion complex on Kounicova and take in the scale of the hall before reading the story.
Look closer
Use the building's volume as the clue: estimate how much interior air a large chorus, orchestra and organ would have had to move.
At seventy-three, Janáček was not winding down. He was making the room bigger.
The Stadion does not look like the obvious birthplace of one of Janáček's most famous late works, which is exactly why it belongs here. On 5 December 1927 the Glagolitic Mass received its first performance in this hall. The official Janáček account describes a 140-strong Brno Beseda chorus with the orchestra of Brno's National Theatre under Jaroslav Kvapil. Imagine the physical problem rather than trying to hear a recording in your head: voices, orchestra and organ turning a large hall into pressure and vibration. Janáček was seventy-three. The useful detail is not that an old composer produced a late masterpiece; it is that his sound world was still expanding in public.
Accessibility at this stop
This is designed as an exterior stop. Kounicova carries traffic and tram movement; the safest viewing position and curb conditions still need human or field confirmation.
