The medieval bridge was built in 1928

On arrival

On Carrer del Bisbe, stop where the bridge can be seen without obstructing the narrow pedestrian flow.

Look closer

Look beneath the bridge for the skull-and-dagger motif, then step back and notice how convincingly the 1928 structure blends into older surroundings.

The city's most photogenic 'medieval' shortcut is less than a century old.

Pont del Bisbe may be the fastest way to break the Gothic Quarter's spell and then enjoy it more. The stone bridge crossing Carrer del Bisbe was designed by Joan Rubió i Bellver and dates from 1928. It is Neo-Gothic. That does not make it worthless or fraudulent; it makes it part of a twentieth-century project that helped give this part of Barcelona a visually coherent 'Gothic' identity. Under the bridge, the skull pierced by a dagger has generated ominous stories that Betevé treats as later legends. Find it, enjoy the unease, and keep the chronology intact. The architecture is modern medievalism. The spooky story is later still.

Accessibility at this stop

Very narrow pedestrian street with crowding at peak times. Choose a stopping point that does not block passage; surface and access conditions require human verification.
