Resistance, Compressed into Fractals

At the intersection of Rooseveltova and Dvořákova streets in Brno stands a bronze monument that translates twentieth-century history into geometry. Unveiled on 17 October 2006, Michal Gabriel's memorial commemorates three distinct periods of war, resistance and political oppression. Instead of resorting to heroic figures, the artwork relies on a three-sided pyramid. Each face is assigned to one historical era, covered in repeated fractal structures designed to create tension and a sense of connection between the periods. The location itself carries explicit weight. Municipal history records show that the site beside the Palace of Justice was chosen following a location study, partly because the adjacent court building is historically linked to trials of opponents of totalitarian regimes.
