On arrival
Stand on Černopolní Street opposite number 39 and view the villa from public space.
Look closer
Look for the asymmetrical tower and expanded massing that belong to later alterations rather than the villa's earliest documented state.
The oldest house on the route is already a revision of itself.
Kaiser Villa is the useful reset button. The first realised villa in this colony dates to 1860 and is documented in Josef Arnold's plans. It was then substantially altered around 1897–1898. That means even the 'first' house is really several houses layered together. Look at the asymmetry and tower and resist the temptation to imagine you are seeing untouched 1860. The colony's history is one of continuous editing. This stop also explains why the neighbourhood cannot be reduced to interwar functionalism: its modern identity rests on a much older experiment in suburban residential life. The visible building is evidence of continuity and revision at the same time.
