Špilberk: The Castle That Was Never Just a Castle

Špilberk has had more careers than a suspiciously ambitious LinkedIn profile: royal castle, fortress, prison, military barracks, horror attraction, ideological stage set and, eventually, museum. This walk follows those reinventions around the hill. The trick is to keep asking the same question: what are you actually looking at, and when was it made to look that way? Along the route, a Swedish siege becomes a Brno origin story, a famous prisoner turns out to have been locked up in the “wrong” place, and even the castle’s medieval face becomes less straightforward than it first appears.
