The Painted Facade on Herrengasse

On arrival

Located at Herrengasse 3, easily recognised by the entire multi-storey street facade being covered in colourful mythological frescoes.

Look closer

Over 220 square meters of street-facing fresco paintings depicting Greco-Roman deities including Jupiter, Apollo, Mercury, Mars, Minerva, and Bacchus.

Illustrates complete architectural facadism through fresco painting and highlights micro-design elements like UNESCO street signage.

As you stroll down Herrengasse, prepare to encounter over 220 square metres of vibrant, hand-painted myth across a single building facade. Known as the Gemaltes Haus, this site historically served as the Herzogshof or ducal court. In 1742, Baroque painter Johann Mayer covered the entire street-facing wall in frescos, replacing earlier painted layers that stretched back to around 1600. Stand across the street to scan the tiers of Classical deities rendered in full colour: spot Jupiter with his thunderbolts, Apollo, Mercury, Mars, Minerva, and Bacchus. This monumental fresco transformation converted a medieval structural core into a grand public billboard, demonstrating how 18th-century Graz used decorative paint to assert cultural status without rebuilding stone walls. While admiring the wall art, take a look at the red-and-white street signs along Herrengasse. Notice how inside this UNESCO core, the traditional green enamel signs of outer districts are replaced by white plaques featuring a red border panel and the official UNESCO World Heritage emblem—a tiny micro-design nuance marking the boundaries of protected heritage.
