The squares are still beautiful, but they should now look less innocent: saints, gods, workers and legends all compete to define what the city is. Olomouc did not inherit one civic identity. It kept editing it in public.

Olomouc’s old centre is packed with religious buildings, but this is not a church-spotting tour. It follows the institutions behind them: medieval convents, Dominican and Ursuline succession, a prison transformed into a saint’s memorial, Jesuit education, wealthy modern patrons, an archbishop’s palace used for an imperial succession, and a cathedral hill where twelfth-century episcopal masonry still survives. The route stays compact and walkable while moving from Kateřinská to Wenceslas Hill. Along the way it repeatedly separates documented events from religious memory and civic legend, so the city’s beautiful architecture becomes evidence for changing systems of power rather than a sequence of dates and styles.
