A Baroque Tradition, Continued in 2002

On arrival

Cross Horní náměstí to Arion Fountain and circle the basin slowly rather than choosing one 'front' view.

Look closer

Look for the dolphin and turtles, then compare the playful, walk-around composition with the more vertical Baroque fountains nearby.

Demonstrates that the mythological identity of the squares is not merely preserved; it was consciously extended in the twenty-first century.

Arion Fountain looks as though it belongs to the same mythological conversation as the Baroque fountains — and that is exactly why it matters — but it arrived in 2002. Sculptor Ivan Theimer used the ancient story of the poet and musician Arion, rescued at sea by a dolphin, to complete the city’s long-planned set of mythological fountains in a contemporary language. This is a useful antidote to the idea that a historic centre has one authentic date and everything newer is intrusion. Olomouc actively continued an old urban programme centuries later. Walk around rather than reading it frontally: turtles, figures, water and relief details create a fountain designed to be discovered from several angles, more like a small inhabited world than a heroic statue on a pedestal.

Accessibility at this stop

Outdoor stop in the historic centre. The route does not require entering a building here. Stone paving can be uneven or slippery, and temporary markets, terraces, restoration barriers or crowds may narrow the best line. Treat this as provisional accessibility guidance until Streetours has a human on-site verification.

These notes describe known conditions at this stop. Urban conditions can change, so assess the situation on site.
