A Clock Rewritten by a Regime

On arrival

Move to the north side of Olomouc Town Hall and find the recessed astronomical clock façade.

Look closer

Ignore the hands for a moment and scan the mosaic figures: the people represented are workers and ordinary occupations rather than a medieval court of saints and rulers.

Shifts from Baroque religious symbolism to political rewriting: public art can be updated to tell a new regime's story.

Now face the Town Hall, but do not treat the clock as a quaint medieval survivor. The building itself carries centuries of civic government; the clock on its north wall carries a much stranger twentieth-century rewrite. Its present visual programme was created in the 1950s in the language of socialist realism, replacing older religious and dynastic imagery with workers, farmers and an idealised calendar of labour. That clash is the point: one façade lets you watch political power edit the public image of time. If you can be here around noon, the mechanism performs. If not, the mosaics are enough. Ask yourself what a city calendar is supposed to celebrate — saints, rulers, harvests, professions, or whichever system is currently in charge.

Accessibility at this stop

Outdoor stop in the historic centre. The route does not require entering a building here. Stone paving can be uneven or slippery, and temporary markets, terraces, restoration barriers or crowds may narrow the best line. Treat this as provisional accessibility guidance until Streetours has a human on-site verification.
