The railway wound became a square

On arrival

Enter Plaza de la Ciudadanía from Avenida de Madrid or Paseo de Calanda and stop where the open paved space can be read as a whole.

Look closer

Look for the unusually broad open space and traffic geometry, then imagine a railway line cutting across the route between neighbourhood and centre.

The walk begins with a scar that became a civic seam.

Start where a transport problem was eventually converted into public space. Zaragoza's municipal history describes the Madrid–Zaragoza–Alicante railway crossing the Madrid road as a serious barrier between Delicias and the centre. A level crossing appeared in 1911 and was enlarged, but the conflict between trains and everyday movement did not really disappear. The city says the fissure was finally removed in 2002, when the railway was buried and Plaza de la Ciudadanía was created. Stand in the open square and imagine the opposite condition: gates, tracks and waiting. The important detail is absence. What you can no longer see explains why this public space exists here at all.

Accessibility at this stop

Large public square with paved approaches; exact kerbs, gradients, crossings and temporary works require current human verification.
