On arrival
Find the life-size mammoth near the Cascada and lake area, visible directly from the public park path.
Look closer
Notice the attempt at life-size bodily presence rather than a pedestal monument; then look around for the seven extinct animals that were planned but never installed.
A complete scientific display survives as a single oversized orphan.
Near the cascade, the mammoth is funny partly because it looks so committed to a project that never happened. In 1907 Barcelona's natural-science authorities planned a set of eight life-size reconstructions of extinct animals around the park. The mammoth was the first installed — and the last. The models for the seven unrealised animals survived, which turns this single sculpture into evidence of a much larger abandoned idea. Do not treat it as random park decoration. Walk around the animal and imagine seven companions distributed through the landscape. The empty spaces are part of the story. Ciutadella briefly aspired to become a walk-through catalogue of prehistory, then stopped after entry number one.
