A Prison Cell Turned into a Saint's Memorial

On arrival

Find the small Chapel of St John Sarkander on Na Hradě and pause where its lower level and the constrained site are visible.

Look closer

Notice how the modern memorial architecture marks a former prison location rather than simply occupying a conventional church square.

Introduces coercion and memory: the same site can move from civic punishment to religious veneration.

The chapel of St John Sarkander stands on the site of the former city prison, where the Catholic priest was interrogated and tortured in 1620 during the violent political and confessional crisis of the Thirty Years’ War era. Later Catholic memory transformed that place of coercion into a site of martyrdom; Sarkander was canonised in 1995. The distinction matters. His torture and death here are documented historical events, while the devotional interpretation of his refusal to break the seal of confession belongs to a religious tradition and should be presented as such rather than smuggled in as neutral fact. Look down as well as up: the architecture makes a memorial out of a location associated with imprisonment. Power changes meaning when the victim later becomes the person commemorated.
