The Chateau the Future Couldn't Erase

On arrival

Compare the villa's domestic scale with the vast exhibition grounds that grew around it.

Look closer

The pre-existing structure and its layers of adaptation, including the interior linked to Adolf Loos.

The fairground's best glitch in time was standing here before the fair even arrived.

Bauerův zámeček (Bauer's Chateau) stood on this land long before the exhibition grounds were built, and it features an interior redesign connected to Adolf Loos. It's the tour's finest temporal anomaly: while surrounding pavilions proclaimed a new era, this villa reminded everyone that the site already possessed history, existing uses, and distinct forms. The fair didn't arrive on a blank canvas. It had to expand around an existing estate, much like any vision of the future must negotiate with inherited structures. Sometimes it transforms them; sometimes it repurposes them; sometimes it simply learns to coexist. Total novelty looks great in manifestos, but real cities are built in layers. Compare the intimate scale of the villa with the sprawling exhibition grounds that eventually enclosed it. This brings our time machine full circle: 1928 imagined tomorrow; 1958 staged it again; and the following decades reshaped both futures. Brno didn't predict 2028. It did something much more interesting: it built a place where tomorrow felt walkable, even when it had to carefully dodge yesterday along the way. ⏳
