Hybrid architecture linking an 1848 cast-iron facade with a biomorphic blue acrylic structure featuring 16 roof nozzles and a BIX media facade matrix.
Connects 19th-century industrial prefabrication and structural compromise with 2003 avant-garde biomorphic architecture.
A 19th-century cast-iron building facade connects directly to a biomorphic blue acrylic structure fitted with 16 roof nozzles and a BIX media facade matrix. Built between 1846 and 1848 by Josef Benedikt Withalm, the Eisernes Haus was one of Continental Europe's earliest prefabricated cast-iron commercial structures. While popular guidebooks often call it Austria's first fully cast-iron building, construction instability forced Withalm to compromise: using a masonry lower base and restricting the cast-iron skeleton to upper floors. A local legend claims its basement once operated as Graz's first red-light establishment, though archival records show a subterranean entertainment venue. In 2003, architects Sir Peter Cook and Colin Fournier annexed the Eisernes Haus into the biomorphic Kunsthaus. Remarkably, 15 of its 16 roof nozzles face strictly north for natural gallery lighting, while a single nozzle points east to frame the Schlossberg Clock Tower.
