The Imperial Boulevard of Migration and Memory

Look closer

Examines the transition of an imperial grand boulevard into an immigrant commercial hub marked by memory-focused public text art.

Laid out as the grand boulevard connecting Graz's Main Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof) to the historic inner city via the central river bridge, Annenstraße reflects the economic fluctuations of the right bank. Flanked by imposing 19th-century Wilhelminian facades, the street thrived as a major commercial artery. However, late 20th-century shifts and suburban shopping centers led to severe retail decline, resulting in widespread store vacancies. This downturn allowed affordable space for international entrepreneurs—particularly Turkish, Balkan, and Middle Eastern business owners—turning Annenstraße into a vibrant multicultural corridor. Between 2011 and 2013, artist Kristina Leko created a series of text-based wall monuments along the street. These public wall texts document oral histories and personal biographies of local immigrant and working-class residents, embedding personal memory into the physical urban architecture alongside active tram tracks and pop-up creative ventures.
