The Third Synagogue and Excavated Memory

On arrival

Stand outside the museum entrance at Carrer de la Força 8, looking at the restored stone facade housing the Museum of Jewish History.

Look closer

A historic stone building housing subterranean archaeological remains of a 15th-century ritual bath and displayed Hebrew funerary inscriptions.

Provides definitive physical and archival proof of medieval Jewish life through property sale contracts and excavated archaeology.

Located at Carrer de la Força 8, this complex stands on the fully documented site of Girona's third and final synagogue, which served the community from 1415 until 1492. Surviving notary archives record that on 10 July 1492, community leaders sold this synagogue complex to canons of Girona Cathedral for 300 Barcelona pounds. The building subsequently underwent centuries of domestic alterations. However, groundbreaking excavations conducted between 2014 and 2015 by archaeologists uncovered the subterranean stone structures and water basins of a fifteenth-century mikveh, or Jewish ritual bath. Inside, the museum also houses a remarkable Lapidarium containing Hebrew-inscribed funerary stones recovered from Montjuïc hill. Here, archival documentation and subterranean archaeology come together to verify the exact footprint of medieval Jewish communal life.
