Imperial Nostalgia and the Architecture of Exile

On arrival

Stand in Piazza della Libertà facing the front of Trieste Centrale railway station, positioned between the bronze statue of Empress Elisabeth in the garden and the weathered brick arcade of Il Silos.

Look closer

The bronze and Carrara marble monument to Empress Elisabeth ('Sisi') resting on a local Repen limestone base—featuring reliefs of an Istrian peasant family on the right and allegories of art and nature on the left—and the sprawling, weathered brick and stone arches of the 19th-century Silos bordering the railway tracks.

Contrasts nostalgic Habsburg cosmopolitanism against the grim physical reality of border displacement across two centuries.

Stand before Empress Elisabeth of Austria, captured in bronze and Carrara marble atop local Karst limestone. Unveiled in 1912 just two years before the empire collapsed, she was banished into storage by Italian nationalist authorities in 1921 as an offensive symbol of foreign rule, only returning to this garden in 1997 after fierce local political bickering. Cast your eyes directly behind the station tracks towards the decaying brick arches of Il Silos. Constructed in the 1860s following the Südbahn railway line from Vienna, this vast Austro-Hungarian grain storehouse became the involuntary home for thousands of Italian refugees fleeing Istria and Dalmatia between 1947 and the late 1950s. Decades later, the very same vaulted masonry offered rough shelter to asylum seekers arriving via the Balkan Route before police evicted the encampment on 21 June 2024. Where imperial tourism remembers enlightened Habsburg administration, the raw brickwork behind the tracks remembers the recurrent human fallout of redrawn borders.
