On arrival
At Zelný trh, find the elevated bronze Mozart beside the historic Reduta building.
Look closer
Look at the balancing pose, the stylised instrument beneath the figure and the deliberately non-conventional treatment of the body.
Sometimes the least literal object gives the clearest warning that you are looking at interpretation.
A conventional monument usually tries to make a historical person look reassuringly recognisable. Kurt Gebauer did almost the opposite. His 2008 bronze Mozart stands beside Reduta, where the young composer performed in Brno, but the figure is presented as a prodigy and acrobat balancing on a stylised clavichord. The municipal description openly treats the nudity and movement as symbols of freedom, joy and flight. That matters for this route: nobody is asking you to believe Mozart literally looked or stood like this. The work is an authorised invention built around a real historical connection. Walk around it and notice how quickly your brain switches from 'portrait' to 'idea'.
