A University Building with a Legendary Victory on the Ceiling

If the chapel is closed, identify its place within the complex from outside; the key detail is the ceiling narrative inside, not a requirement to enter.

The former Jesuit Convict is now part of Palacký University’s Arts Centre, but its Baroque fabric still carries the ambitions of Jesuit education in Olomouc. The attached Corpus Christi Chapel provides the sharpest detail: a ceiling painting made by Johann Christoph Handke in 1728 depicts the supposed victory of Jaroslav of Šternberk over the Tatars near Olomouc in 1241. The city’s official source explicitly calls that victory legendary and historically unproven. That makes this stop perfect for Streetours. A beautiful artwork can be solid evidence that people told a story without being evidence that the story happened. From the square, read the complex as a machine for education, ceremony and memory. The university use today adds yet another institutional layer without erasing the Jesuit one.
