Urban Contextualism in the Jewish Quarter

Local Girona stone base, traditional stucco finish, sgraffito wall decor, and vernacular window proportions.

Standing before Carrer de la Força, 6, the building offers an immediate lesson in architectural discretion. Built between 1926 and 1928, this late residential work by Rafael Masó demonstrates mature Noucentisme in action. Rather than resorting to fake gothic ornament or stark modern contrast, Masó integrated a contemporary bourgeois home directly into the medieval Jewish Quarter. The construction absorbed the historic Passatge d'Hernández, yet the facade respects the street's historical grain through vernacular window proportions and local stone. Look closely at the exterior walls to observe delicate sgraffito decor and traditional stucco work setting off the rough Girona stone base. Masó understood that preserving heritage did not mean copying the past, but rather continuing its craftsmanship with modern order.
