The Burning of the Slavic Civic City

Max Fabiani's Secessionist-rationalist stone facade with distinctive geometric fenestration, external commemorative plaques inscribed in Italian and Slovene, and the interior atrium documentation space.

Look up at this rigorous Secessionist facade. Designed by modernist architect Max Fabiani and opened in 1904, the Narodni Dom was the architectural manifesto of Trieste's Slovene population, who made up roughly a quarter of the urban census in 1910. It was far more than a cultural centre: behind these stone walls lay the Balkan Hotel, a 400-seat theatre, a savings bank, printing presses for the newspaper Edinost, and Slavic civic societies. On 13 July 1920, Italian fascist squadristi led by Francesco Giunta laid siege to the building and set it ablaze. Benito Mussolini openly lauded the arson as the 'masterpiece of Triestine fascism', inaugurating the violent, forced Italianisation of the borderlands that outlawed the Slovene tongue and Italianised Slavic surnames. Although later converted into a hotel and subsequently acquired by the university, the building was formally restituted to the Slovene minority in 2022, currently operating under a ten-year transitional lease while academic classes gradually vacate.
