The Gothic Quarter moved house

Study the palace as a complete-looking historic object while keeping in mind that its current site is the result of a twentieth-century move.

End at Casa Padellàs because it makes the entire route harder to simplify. The late-medieval/early-modern palace did not always stand on Plaça del Rei. It was dismantled from Carrer dels Mercaders and reconstructed here in 1931–1932. Work for the new foundations also helped reveal Roman remains beneath the square, which later became central to MUHBA. In other words, a project intended to reshape the visible historic city also exposed a much older city underground. Look at the palace and imagine every stone numbered, moved and rebuilt. The Gothic Quarter is not a frozen medieval survivor. It is also a twentieth-century editorial project made from authentic material.
